Butterflies, Blooms and Baking

"Just living is not enough," said the butterfly,
"one must have sunshine, freedom and a little flower."
~Hans Christian Andersen
Today I have been playing with leftover bits of yarn.   The butterflies were made using a free pdf download.  You can find similar ones at Little Birdie Secrets (which is where I got the idea for tying yarn around the middle).

The butterfly is a flying flower,
The flower a tethered butterfly.
~Ponce Denis Écouchard Lebrun
The flowers are similar to ones I've made from one of my crochet books, but Ingrid at ing-things brighten up my day also shares a pattern on her blog.
Happiness is a butterfly, which when pursued,
is always just beyond your grasp, but which,
if you will sit down quietly, may alight upon you.

~Nathaniel Hawthorne

I did take a break from my yarn to do some baking since we were going to visit friends this evening.
Shortbread with raspberry jam centers.
The recipe was taken from Jellywares and is so very simple.

Mix together 1 cup of all purpose flour, 1/2 cup powdered sugar and one stick of softened butter.  Roll into balls and press lightly into mini muffin tins.  Poke a hole in the middle (but not all the way through) and add either jam, chocolate, nuts or curd.

For real blooms and butterflies, you can visit the following lovely bloggers:

And if you'd like to make your own jam, Meredith shares a how-to today on her blog one sheepish girl.

Have a fabulous Friday!

Tammy, first I love your crochet covered rocks, great idea and they are really beautiful. Your butterfly and flower are a great way to use up yarn, loved the wrapped middle on the butterfly. I bet your son will do better this year in school, not every school wants a child with a 4.0, some want decent grades and great life experience, which it seems he is getting living where he does. It will be an interesting year ahead of you, well for both of us lots and lots of decisions and changes ahead. Happy weekend,
Meredith

Hi Tammy, you clever little creative thing, you. Such a sweet flower and butterfly.

Oh! Thanks so much for your mention of my beloved blog. I was reading along in your post and saw that and said, "WOW! That Tammy is awesome."

Hope your weekend is splendid. The shortbread yummies looked divine but I'd want to eat every last one of them before I even made it out the door. They would be dangerous for me. Look great though.

Take care. Susan

To answer your question OSU picked him for his swimming abilities. It will really help to have the coaches watching out for him and the mandatory study halls and tutors. He has not been the best student, but he will have to be now. I think schools are so much better at helping students now, when I went to school there wasn't help and they were always trying to wean us out of the program. Next year if your son decides to come to the states for school, here can come to my house if he needs to. We are in Florida, but it is still closer than 8,000 miles away.
Have a great day,
Meredith

Beautiful crochet work and those shortbread/jam cookies look divine. :)

I'm thankful for a short work week here - most of my summer is like that - we just had the best time reconnecting with old friends over the weekend and now we're planning for our big annual summer party which is this weekend, June 30th, at our house.

Hope you enjoy a great week,
Linda
