Memories of Mammaw

Good morning everyone! Hope your Saturday is off to a great start.  This morning I am having toast with fig & ginger jam.  Whenever I eat figs, I think of my Mammaw, my dad's mom.
She used to make the best ever fig preserves.  Piled up on a biscuit with butter.  Boy was it good.  From what I'm told, she also used to give me coffee in my bottle -- more milk than coffee, of course, and sweet, just the way she liked it.  Maybe that's why I prefer a latte to this day.  Of course, now I choose to have a skinny latte with 1/2 tsp of brown sugar.
On my birthday, February 26, 1988, I received the call that Mammaw had suffered a heart attack. Thankfully, we were all able to visit her in the hospital, to spend quality time with her, before she passed away in March of that year.  Her birthday would have been the end of January.  I still think of her.  Still add up all the years and imagine how old she would be today had she lived.
Memory is a way of holding onto the things you love, the things you are, the things you never want to lose.  ~From the television show The Wonder Years

Wishing you a day filled with wonderful memories!

Tammy,

Thanks for the nice comments on my blog yesterday. Thanks for following, too.

My dad's birthday was last month; he turned 83. Still going strong. LOL.

Rings so true cuz I don't even know what I did last week but remember every single birth of my kid to the detail. I love your food choices...just wish I would be smart enough and adopt them for myself:)

It is amazing what little things can bring back so many sweet memories. Homemade pizza brings back sweet memories of my grandma's kitchen. Wishing you a wonderful weekend.

Hi Tammy! When my mom passed away, we guarded our last jars of her homemade strawberry and peach jam. They were to be used sparingly and when we did use them we talked about her. At our first reunion after she was gone, my brother and his wife made all of us peach jam with her recipe... it was a heartfelt gift that we treasured. I love the quote from the wonder years, I miss that show! t.xoxoxo

What a sweet way to remember someone so special. Food has a special way of invoking memories, I only have to smell homemade bread and I'm back in my Grandmas kitchen on Sunday mornings as she did her weeks baking.

Dearest Tammy,

Memories of a dear grandparent are so valuable and in a way powerful too!
You asked me if I was alright. Yes, my week with headaches is over now and I guess that's a good sign, indicating that my brother is finally on the mend. His pelvic surgery was done early on Thursday but due to an emergency they had to postpone his left shoulder surgery. Than they kept him sedated for a couple of days and he was back to ICU.
Don't know yet how he is today, yesterday they had to suck some mucus from his lungs, not a good thing I guess but he was no longer sedated.
The time difference is a problem in the communication and I have given up to make lengthy phone calls from here. Have to live also our own life.
Love to you,

Mariette

I've never had fig jam or preserves. I need to try that. My grandparents had all passed before I was born so I didn't get to know them but I did have a very special Aunt who was like a Grandma and she always made lemon merengue pie when I came to visit because she knew it was my favorite. Sweet memories!
Enjoy your weekend whenever it is! LOL!

Hello Tammy - I was thrilled you came to visit me via Shane, and thank you for leaving a comment about my recent visit to Thailand/Vietnam.

I love making and eating fig jam but I've never added ginger which I love too! Do you add crystalized or fresh ginger? I'd love to try it. I think I'm going to enjoy your recipes - I see things I love such as lentils, cauliflower (I made cream of cauli soup just today), and that pear and ginger cake, I must give that one a go too!

Looks like you're a world traveler, to some very interesting place also!
Hugs - Mary

Taste DOES have a
way of transporting
us back in time. My
daughter adores fig
jam, especially with
a really sharp cheddar
such as Dubliner. Your
grandma sounds like
she was a very special
lady.

I recently tasted fig jam for the first time, it was good.

I've been journeying down Memory Lane lately with old photos prompting me. I always play the "how old would they be now" game and am amazed sometimes at the ages I come up with!

Hope you have a lovely week ahead of you in the sunshine. We have got lots of snow just now. Kathleen.

I've never been a fan of figs but I'll have some ginger jam please. :)

It's nice that you have these lovely memories to hold on to. I know certain tastes or smells can instantly transport me back in time. xo

Tammy, figs remind me of my MaMaw, too (on my Mom's side). She made fig preserves from the big fig tree behind her house... and when we would visit (not very often... but made strong memories) she would make teacakes and fill them with the fig preserves... They were so good. And unlike anything we ever had anywhere else. My MaMaw passed away when my daughter was one. I still miss her, too... {hugs} tanna

ps good food and good company are really hard to beat! ;)
