Tuesday This and That

In the States, there are Dollar Stores, but here, we have the 100 fils stores.

100 fils is about .30 cents. When I was teaching kindergarten, I used to shop at these stores all the time because I could find little gifts for the kids, stickers and all sorts of things. The price was certainly right. Granted, some things might cost 150 fils now, but at still less than .50 cents, you just can't beat it. I got rocks and shells and pretty colored decorative glass pieces.

Beach inspired candleholders.

Plastic containers with red lids and little cups with hearts that I've started to fill with candy and gingham hearts for Valentine's Day.

And these great little camels.

The main reason I went to the 100 fils store was to purchase 40 coffee mugs. The same person who coordinates the Trash to Treasures program at one of the embassy shelters, is now going to hold a 6-week course for some of these ladies based on Steven Covey's book The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People. Other ladies have donated baked goods for the evening, and I helped to provide mugs that can be used each week, pretty napkins and sweet-smelling candles to set a lovely mood. I was able to purchase the last of the palm trees made by the ladies at the shelter and donated more magazines and fliers for their cause.

******************************
While out shopping, I also bought these magazines from a bookstore.

Look at the title of one of the articles.

This used to be a rice box, and now it is a lovely little gift box.

And this is another shoebox makeover. It's not complete yet as I still need to get some crocheted lace for a trim around the lid.

A lovely quotation I put on the lid.

Hope you are having a terrific Tuesday. Peace & blessings, Tammy

It is fun to find a creative use for things that might be tossed otherwise. Your little boxes are a cute idea! Really like the quote you added.

Great recycle ideas. I keep meaning to do some shoeboxes for the St. Vincent store. With personal items like power, toothbrush and paste etc. Great idea.

I would go nuts in a store like that!! I am tired today.. I have been eating well and good and for some reason my blood sugar dipped to 63 today... I was shaking so bad , I could barely check my blood sugar and then when I saw the number I made a fruit smoothie as fast as I could . But now am tired the rest of the day... the only thing I can think is I waited too long between meals. anyway.... I get mixed views about my dark background. I will keep it until I change it. ha!

Your trip to the 100 fils store looks like quite an outing. I am sure that your purchases will wind up making some really cool gifts for some lucky person. Did you find the mugs you were looking for? What a great idea to have such a course, and I am sure they will love the mugs. Your contributions to the program will make it an enjoyable place for these women to be for sure. I LOVE the palm trees you bought. What a really neat idea. If you have any left next summer, I know someone in Texas who would love one!! Hint, hint!
Someone was thinking of you when they wrote the article about not throwing things away. Good to know you were able to find some nice magazines.
Keep crafting, dear. The boxes are really too cool. Keep those creative ideas coming!!

Love ya,
Renee

What a great post! I learned something new today about currency :-) We have here stores names "9.99" , which is what you get in Guatemalan quetzales for US$1.20 So it's safe to say there are dollar stores world-wide! What I like about them, is that you can do interesting things (crafts and gifts, or decoration) with what they sell. Interesting things you bought! and for great causes. Love to shoebox! I'm a box fan. Love boxes of any kind, as I love to storage in them my memories and special things.
have a lovely day!!
*hugs*

Great ideas! I'm always humbled by the clever things you come up with. I haven't really had an interest in making things for a while - I used to create things a lot when I was a stay-at-home Mom, many years ago now, but working full time, taking care of our home, and WRITING has taken all of my time. Not that I'm complaining... it's just different now. :)

Still, I always enjoy seeing the ideas that you come up with.

Blessings,
Linda

You've got some really good finds at "mia" fils store. Love the jars with the hearts. Maybe I'll do something for Valentines for the girls at school. You always do the prettiest things with your recycled boxes. I don't have enough decorating supplies and wouldn't even know where to start. Someone people, like yourself, are just naturally talented with it. I'm in agreement with everyone here about the article. Called the magazine personally to tell them about your fanaticism in recycling so they decided to run an article just for you...LOL! Let me know what I can donate to the Trash to Treasures other than magazines and I'd be more than happy to do my share in trying to help these ladies do something productive and beautiful.

I, mean, who can pass up a treasure at a Dollar Store. Great fun finds. I don't think we'd have those cute camels here... boo-hoo.

Good Morning Tammy Sweetie...
I am so thrilled that you popped by. I love it when new visitors stop by and say hi. I have signed up to follow you. I can't wait to see what you share next. I love all you finds that you from your "fils" stores. I love the containers with the little hearts. So pretty and you can fill them with so many gifts from the heart. That is the best part.

I love the magazine you bought about not throwing things away and recycling so to speak. That rice box is so beautiful. Oh my gosh what a beautiful job you did with it.

I can't wait to see your shoe box finale. It is going to be magnificent. What a treasure. Please remember to repost when you are complete with it. Can't wait.

Please stop back by and sign up to follow me as well. I would be so honored. I pray you have a blessed day sweetie.

Hi Tammy, I sure like your finds. But I'm really interested in the recycling "fad". (I've spent my life recycling) I just got the new GreenCraft mag from Somerset, which has me off on tangents.
Keep inspiring us!
