Exploring Museums

Thursdays are my day to volunteer in the pediatric playroom at the hospital.  With it being summer, there's very few patients each week, so today I was able to leave early, which gave me the opportunity to do a bit of exploring around the area.
I first tried to visit the Maritime Museum but, even though it was opening hours, the front entrance was locked.
So I took a few pictures and then moseyed on over to the Modern Art Museum (in 115 degree heat, but thankfully it wasn't far).
A lovely lady named Fatima showed me around.  I didn't take a lot of pictures but just enjoyed visiting a place that, in all these years of living here, I've never been to.
I love the style of the old buildings and wish people kept this way of living as it has so much more character than what we see being built today.
Really loved this peacock made from rusty gadgets.
Check out that tail.
Just across the parking lot, there was an old building that is apparently being renovated.  The grounds were really dirty and smelly so I just took a few skyward shots.

It's my plan to make myself get out at least a couple of days per week to explore all the places I've not been to.  Summer is a great time to do so since so many people have traveled, the roads aren't so crowded and places are nice and quiet.

Hope you have a great Thursday!

Good morning, Oh I love the peacock! hopefully you can catch the maritime museum another time--I think most of us take it for granted where we live and don't take the time to really visit and explore our area. I am bad with that too.
Happy weekend ahead Kathy

Hi Tammy, The peacock is stunning. Was there more rusty/upcycled art exhibited? It's a shame that the Maritime Museum wasn't open even though it should have been. That could have happened here as well.
Hugs,
Julia

I'm also sorry the Maritime Museum wasn't open as I find them wonderful as I love sailing and boats and the history of it all. I'm glad you got out and about! ((hugs)), Teresa :-)

I love to meander and explore and your visits to places you haven't been to is wonderful. I am also a fan of older architecture and do not care for the new "minimalist" style being built now days. It is stark and cold and ho-hum! I like character and detail and that Peacock is wonderful! Stay hydrated dear...<3

I like that despite the heat you got out there and went exploring. I've been guilty of holing up inside too much and our heat is nothing compared to yours. You have now inspired me to find a little adventure.
Great idea to visit some of the attractions right in your own area. The art museum looks wonderful.

Nice! That's what I try to do sometimes on my runs around campus - explore areas that I normally wouldn't go when the campus is filled with students and faculty (which unfortunately will be again very soon - in just a few weeks now). I love the slower, quieter summertime months though I would enjoy less extreme heat and humidity which is all we've had here for the past month.

Moving our youngest, and my only, Sarah out of the house in just a few days... she has an apartment with her boyfriend on just the other side of Champaign so not far away, but still. Though I'm extremely happy for her because she also got offered both jobs that she interviewed for in the last week and accepted the one that is only 5 minutes away from her house. She will be an Employment Counselor for the Developmental Services Center (helping those with disabilities learn various job skills), utilizing her degree in the arts and all of her creative talents. Can't ask for anything better than that, considering she just graduated in May! :)

Hope you are enjoying a wonderful weekend,
Linda

Hello dearest Tammy!

Oh WOW, the peacock is really wonderful – I’d like to have such a pretty rusty bird in our garden! And YES, I also wish people kept this way of living!

Good idea to explore the museums while the most people are on vacations. In Austria summer is no good time to visit such places because the city is full with tourists…

Lots of hugs, Traude

Fascinating and I love the timbers/sticks they used for the ceiling and roofs....so rustic and you can tell with the stones too all done by hand and how old could it be? They have stood the test of time for sure! The statue of the person whose hands are separated....it reminded me of some countries where if you steal they cut off your hands...is that still going on? Maybe that's not what it meant but that's what I took away from it. The peacock was amazing but the architecture is what I really enjoy the most. TYFS!

Yes the older buildings have so much more character. Your outing looked very interesting and educational. Those are my favorite type.

Tammy - glad you are getting out and about despite the heat! I was fascinated with the cloister with the arches at the art museum. Looks like a good place to have a few rocking chairs and a cool drink. I am so glad you captured the peacock - it would fit well with the rustic industrial style we are using at our log house.

By the way, I have tried to install the LinkedWithin widget on my blog and have had 0 success. I thought I followed the instructions on their web site and I even sent them an email asking for help - no response. Any suggestions?

Have a great weekend!

What a great tour! Since I will never be able to come to your country, I just love seeing all the photos you take of it. There seems to be so many things to do there. :) Kit

Dearest Tammy,
Happy for you for being able to finally explore such museums and areas you never had a chance to see.
Yes, I do agree with you that they should have kept their old architectural style, love those arches and it belongs to the area.
When we were in Spain, we just loved the old Moorish architecture; fabulous arches!
So often we never fully explore the area we live in for so long... You are smart for doing so.
Sending you hugs,
Mariette

I like that architecture too, with the covered walkways/porches to provide shade in the heat and that peacock sculpture is a beauty.

The photo of the museum gateway is very strange. It has a ramp leading up to the threshold but the door at the top of the ramp is closed. Meanwhile the door with the step is open. How thoughtless! So much for wheelchair access there!

Your photos, as always, are intriguing and interesting, especially the final one which juxtaposes the old with the new.
