Life and Blooms

Yesterday morning at 6:30 a.m. my husband witnessed a horrific accident.  A pedestrian crossing the highway was hit by a car going at very, very high speed.  I couldn't even bear to hear the details.  It just doesn't make sense to me that on an empty highway so early in the morning something like that could happen.
While visiting Piece O' Cake today, I came across this inspiring video called Before I Die.  It's amazing how one simple idea can have such an impact and then ripple around the world.  Lovely, wonderful things do happen; we just don't often get to hear about them.
At the beginning of this year, when we were still in the "winter months", our balconies were filled with beautiful plants.  This picture of Jingles watching the world go by is one of my favorites.
Unfortunately, all that beautiful greenery perished in the summer heat.  So in an effort to green things up again, we made a trip to the plant souk yesterday afternoon.

Even though our temperatures are still at least 110 every day, mornings and evenings are a little more bearable.  I spent several hours yesterday and some time today repotting everything we brought home.  Imagine my surprise when one of the old plants that I thought was a goner actually bloomed today.
Yesterday Suzanne at Privet and Holly wrote a beautiful post entitled Autumn Bloomers where she compared life and blooms.  Her posts are always so thought provoking.

Have a blessed day!

That was a very nice, thought-provoking post, Tammy. I loved that girl's ability to rise out of the depths of her own sorrow and do something wonderful. Also loved her phrase about life being "brief and tender." How true that is. Thanks for the post. Susan

What a wonderful and thoughtful post. I'm watering my flowers and plants every day...we have had a heat wave too...but not like yours.

I love when a plant I think is gone...after some water is revived and blooms.

Have a great day.

Dearest Tammy,

So sorry for your dear husband for having to witness such an awful accident. One wonders WHY a person is speeding at that time of the day...?!
Jingles is so happy in her little green world.
Since you start out new, why don't you try this tip: http://mariettesbacktobasics.blogspot.com/2011/11/our-canary-island-date-palm-eco.html
For sure those Eco friendly tree rings will be available in your area. We keep them now on all our potting plants, except the Arabian jasmines as they are more bushy. It would be a great help for keeping the moisture trapped inside the soil. Make sure you also do mix up some good potting soil so your plants at least have some great nutrition to start off.
Wishing you good luck with your new 'greens'.
Hugs to you both,
Mariette

Tammy Dear thank you for sharing this post today. I took the time to watch and listen to "Before I Die" and it really is thought-provoking. I shall embrace this way of preparing for death instead of just living/existing. Powerful indeed! Hugs to Jingles. Some new greenery will be very nice. Blessings...

wow ... Thank you for finding and sharing that.

I came here from another's blog and quite glad I did. I hope you husband is OK as I can not even imagine how troubling that vision could be replayed over and again in one's mind. I wish him peace.

Beautiful blog!

My thoughts are with your husband too, that must have been awful to be involved with. He will need a green oasis to come home to and yours is lovely.

That's horrible about that pedestrian and your husband witnessing it :( You know my thoughts about most people in general - they rush far too much. I'll never understand it. Life goes fast enough, why do people have to drive and rush so fast?!!

Your patio flowers are lovely and I haven't watched the video yet but I will. Jingles is adorable as always.

We're just back from our family reunion and I'm trying to use our Sunday to get laundry done and to mow the grass in a little bit. There's a whole lot of growing green here right now due to the cooler fall temperatures. The grass could quit growing and I'd be happy as I'm now back to mowing twice a week! :O

Have a great new week,
Linda

That video touched my heart. What a wonderful concept.

I cleaned my flower beds last of all the dead and dying plants. I'm hoping to get a few new ones in a few weeks.

Have a wonderful week.

Maybe the unexpected bloom was a sign that even though your husband witnessed this horrific accident, that life still blooms even when we see something horrible. Are you feeling safe with all the unrest everywhere?
I have been thinking of you,
Meredith

I am so sorry to hear about the person being hit, and your husband having to witness it.

Keep on planting, even if you know some of the plants will die. It's one way to celebrate life.

Have a good rest-of-the-week!

How awful for your hubby to witness such a terrible accident. I don't understand why people feel the need to speed on the roads...so dangerous.

I watched the Candy Chang video just last week via a Facebook post. What a great idea!

I hope all your new plants cope better in the dreadful heat and how lovely to see that one of your old plants survived after all.

I witnessed a death of a woman once in a car accident and I was the only one on the scene...she was already gone when I reached her but I will never forget it. How life can be "snuffed out" that quickly..i had just seen her sitting in her car..living, breathing and then not. The video reminds us all that we are here to make a positive contribution to this planet "before we die". Amazing what she did with just an idea..a thought...an action.
I was amazed when I moved here from the North how no one had flowers in their yards....now I know why...it's TOO HOT! They were probably laughing at me outside all Summer running around trying to keep all my plants alive. LOL! And they did all look SO pretty in the Spring.
