Tibetan Refuge Camp

After the Tibetan National Uprising against the Chinese invasion in 1959, tens and thousands of Tibetans fled to India, Bhutan and Nepal. In Pokhara, we visited Tashiling Tibetan Settlement which was established in 1964. In 1971, the handicraft center was opened so that the refugees could support themselves and promote the art of carpet weaving and design.

All of the carpets they produce are woven from handspun imported pure Tibetan sheep wool that is hand dyed.

The carpets are made in 100, 80 and 60 knots. Every motive has a special meaning and signifies blessings, such as power, prosperity and good luck to the user.

Profits are used for education, healthcare, sanitation, and taking care of the elderly and physically handicapped refugees of the camp. Of course, I had to contribute to their cause.

Small square carpets.

And these little bags are the perfect size to hold passports and other important items when travelling.

I tried another pattern from The Royal Sisters called Grandma All Round.

Not sure what I will do with them but it is better than cleaning.

Have a terrific Tuesday! Friendship blessings, Tammy

What beautiful carpets and neat to see the actual weaving done in person. The little bags remind me of the colorful weavings that are done in Guatemala. Your Grandma All Around motifs are pretty; not sure what size they are, but could you use them as coasters? Have a terrific day! :-)

THANK YOU for helping these women. The whole tragedy of China's overtaking Tibet is a subject that makes my husband (and I) so angry. It's beyond stupidity.

The carpet squares and pouches are wonderful and IF I had a million dollars, I'd buy everything they make.

Thanks for sharing the story, too. Bless you.

Hugs

What a shame these poor people can't just go home to where they belong... great to see them creating anyway...the little carpets are lovely...
Tammy all you would need is a cushion to sew the crochet on to...no back required!! I too wish I could just show you how...stitch by stitch... :) :) :)

The movie starring Brad Pitt - Seven Years in Tibet - covered some the history surrounding the Chinese occupation of Tibet. It's a heartbreaking situation and a very worthy cause.

I like those little bags!

You could use your crochet circles to embellish throws, pillows etc., or perhaps make them coaster size?

I've been catching up on your week of walking and taking photos. I have had a wonderful time living vicariously through your blog. Really impressive that you see the good and "rich"ness in everyone. And of course, those rugs are amazing. I'm glad you were able to purchase one. It will be a treasure you will love forever, and you will have the memory of buying it, too.

I know I'm really late today, but happy LaTE Tea Tuesday.

I love your life....all the travel and interaction with people of different cultures. Do you have a post anywhere that explains why you are overseas and what you do? I've looked but haven't seen anything. Just interested! Great photos.

Hi Tammy,

I'm a sucker for color too and love the little bags you got.

Your crocheted items are so lovely. I'm going to have to try it again one day. Right now I'm trying to make time to take up my painting again. I've been spending too much time watering every evening. It's just so scary here without rain and all these high temps. this part of the world isn't equiped for it!

As always, thanks for visiting. (Hubby is very brave to walk in that heat!!)

What a lovely handiwork center you found. I think it is amazing that they produce such beautiful things to help support their life and community. The yarn looks amazing. Such lovely colors. Too bad they did not have some fro your bag to bring home. your items you came home with are perfect reminders of a lovely trip!!
The crochet projects looks lovely, and I am happy you are finding lots to do with your time. The cleaning will always be there!!

Have a great day!
