A Change of Plans

Our first full day in Kathmandu was spent visiting temples (along with a group of school children),

city squares,

monasteries,

and exploring the area around our hotel.

The next day, we hit the road headed for our next stopping point of Pokhara. Although the two cities are only about 90 miles apart, the trip would take approximately 6 hours because of the condition of the roadways.

Besides encountering cows ...

goats ...

and people carrying goods.

We also had to contend with heavy rains ...

rockslides ..

and a river run. A tour bus carrying over 20 passengers tried to cross the road where the river had overflowed. The water actually swept through the bus and everyone on board had to be rescued by rope.

After waiting a couple of hours, it was determined that no one would be getting through for quite some time. I was thankful for my crochet as I got so many projects done during times of travel and waiting.

Yusef took this picture of me and hubby as we were walking back to the bus. When nature calls, you gotta go! And in the middle of nowhere, you go anywhere you can.

The tour company we booked with made arrangements for us to backtrack and make our way instead to Chitwan National Park which was to be our next destination. (We later found out that traffic on the road to Pokhara was at a standstill for 10 hours because of the river run.)

The closer to we got to the National Park, roads were no longer paved and it was quite a bumpy, slippery ride.

This lodge would be where we would stay for the next couple of days. No air conditioning, no tv, and if you like sleeping with salamanders, then this is the place for you.

Next up, our jungle adventures. Have a wonderful Wednesday! Best wishes and blessings, Tammy

oh my gosh! what an adventure you have had! your pics are amazing - the sunsets, nature, people. How unfortunate that it was so wet - did you find the rain a nice change from home or were you happy to come back to dry skies? After living in Ireland for 4 years where it rains constantly, I'm quite enjoying the dry of Dubai, for now anyway. :)

I am definitely a city girl. I need to get where ever I'm going fast and comfortable. No air conditioning is also an issue, I get cranky and weepy. Boy, maybe I am more high maintenance than I thought. I will have to broaden my horizons and learn to go with the flow. So glad you and your family got settled safely.

OK all I can say is... you are a brave and crazy girl!
This is a little too much of an adventure for this Chicago girl.
I hope you are having fun and please stay safe, it doesn't sound real safe with rivers running amuck.
Blessings
Rebecca
PS Lost me when you said sleeping with salamanders

Hi Tammy,

Oh what a fun packed holiday and so glad that you got there safely. The rock slide and the flooding looks very scary.
It does look like it could have been from a movie.
Have a happy day

WOW...quite an adventure! I wouldn't mind salamanders throughout the day where I can actually see them and avoid them but not at night when I'm asleep. :)

What an amazing day!! The temples, and squares around the city are just amazing. It must have been such a thrill to see such old, spectacular buildings. The trip along those roads reminds me of the conditions that were written about in Three Cups of Tea. I cannot imagine the bus that was overcome with water, and the people needing to be rescued by rope. Just amazing.
I read about the hotel you stayed in. I am guessing Omar would have been miserable without the air conditioning, and the boys would have made me miserable without a TV to keep them occupied. Personally, I think it all sounds amazing. What an adventure!!!!!! I can't wait to hear more!

Love you,
Renee
