Scenes from the Souk

Earlier this month we were in Jerusalem to visit my husband's family.
Damascus Gate, main entrance to the Old City

We usually go once a year, but after our February visit, my husband's aunt fell and broke her hip.  She had surgery, a stay in the hospital and then time in a rehabilitation facility.  Since she's blind and 88 years old. my husband felt the need to make sure she is doing okay, physically and emotionally.
The street where family have lived for many generations.

When spending time with family (and it is a very big family), there's always lots of sitting and catching up along with tea and coffee drinking.
Lost count of how many cups I had.

To counteract all that sitting, we would walk the city several times a day.
Early morning walk to see Aunt Ensaf.

In February it was so cold and rainy which made it a bit difficult to get around, so thankfully weather was perfect this time, if not a bit warmer than usual for the time of year.
The good weather meant there were lots and lots (and I mean lots) of tour groups in the city, so those old alleyways can get a bit crowded.
I will leave you now with scenes from the souk and be back again soon.
Fall is pomegranate season.
Have a fabulous Friday!

Oh wow I enjoyed all of the photos.
My Grandma was very religious and wanted to visit Jerusalem in her senior years-she did but by the time she got home she was hospitalized from drinking the water on her trip-this was a long time ago probably in the 80's the market looks amazing.
Have a good visit and hope your husband's aunt is doing well Kathy

The front entrance to the city looks like a huge castle. The streets and neighborhood look so cozy. I would love to visit those markets. I wish we had those here! I hope Sam's Aunt is better and able to go home soon. there's no place like home. He's a good nephew!

Love that you managed a visit with nice weather - I can imagine large crowds right now with Christmas just around the corner.
Souks, oh my, how I love wandering through them - just had many chances whilst in Morocco, so very colorful and interesting.

Hope auntie is much better and will continue to improve, know she loved seeing you and were some great family meet ups.
Sending you hugs - Mary

I'm glad you had such a nice family visit Tammy and also happy that the weather cooperated for you. Jerusalem has always been on my "bucket list" of places to visit. I can't imagine walking where Jesus walked and seeing all of the sights the Bible talks about.
Thank you so much for taking us with you to the Souk. The streets look so inviting to walk down.
I hope and pray that your husbands aunt has completely healed now and is happily back at home.
Blessings,
Betsy

Enjoyed reading about your travels and seeing your wonderful photos, Tammy. It looks fascinating there - in fact, of all the places in the world, this is where I would dream to go but we likely won't. Retirement for us means living small - any trips we take, are fairly local or can be driven to within the day. It's nice that you and your husband take these times to visit family - that's very dear and wonderful.

Kind regards,
Linda

Dearest Tammy,
Wish I could have been there with you as the food and also the tea, far more than the coffee, has always appealed to me!
To tell you the truth, comparing the region where you live and travel now, is far more than what Cordele, GA ever could offer.
So rich in history and seeing the narrow alleys from ages ago, is so special. NOT when loaded with tours of course.
But back to your husband's dear Aunt, hope she is healing accordingly and also being cared for in a way that makes life bearable.
Not easy when being blind and I remember too well how you blogged about her doing it all on her own!
Sending you hugs,
Mariette

Your husband must be such a good nephew to go check on his auntie! I hope she's doing okay. What an amazing place to visit.. I loved seeing all the beads hanging up. Have you ever asked a bead dealer if they have any ancient beads for sale? I can imagine how wonderful they might be. ((hugs)), Teresa :-)

I enjoyed this little virtual visit to Jerusalem with you, especially the walk between the walls overhung with trees. Did you find it cooler than where you live? The souk would be a really interesting experience.

Tammy - I love the pictures of the "cobbled" streets with the steps to one side. Beautiful. And then the souk - so much variety - I can't decide what I like most - it might be the olives! I look forward to catching up on the rest of your new posts!
