Health and Wellness

I must admit, I had become a bit of a couch potato; but since my oldest boy's been home, I've been doing a whole lot of walking.
His request before he even arrived was that I please have a yoga mat waiting for him.
Ever since he took a course in college a couple of years ago, he's been into yoga and fitness.
And tells me that, at my age, walking is not enough. I need to do yoga and some resistance training with an exercise band.
After a bout with bronchitis, he started running in order to strengthen his lungs, so I'm trying to incorporate a bit of that into my walking routine, too.
Our walking path was repaved over the summer and marked every 100 meters, so I am walking 400, jogging 200, walking 400, jogging 200.
It all starts with small steps and simple goals.
Of course, it wouldn't be a walk of wellness without paying attention to my surroundings and finding beauty along the way.

Wishing you well,

I try to do my daily exercises and I am sorry we don't live somewhere near the ocean so I could spend most of my exercise time outside. Skopje is the most polluted city in the world so we are actually high risking our health staying outside. It's horrific!
I am glad you can enjoy time with your boy and care after your health and well-being together :)

Exercise is so much more pleasant when you have good company isn't it? It seems like a great way to connect while your son is home. Enjoy!

I think your son is right! I need to get back on track with fitness. I do wonder though is walking/jogging on asphalt good for your joints? Is it only concrete that's bad? My joints with the RA are what I have to be careful of and that is why I have never been a runner as it's too hard on them. I rode horses for years and so my knees took lots of abuse. I do walk but I also know you need to get your heart rate up and strength training I'm good in already....strong back and strong arms and legs from lifting all the time. I need to start Yoga. I do stretching exercises every morning to remain flexible and I have a pilates machine I need to "dust off"! LOL! He could be a fitness coach part time while at school. He could come up with routines for us "oldies"....not you but my age group as we have "issues"! Boy do we have issues! LOL!

Well done you for getting moving again! I just love how they've put the markings in. It's great for tracking your distances.
Enjoy your time with your son. xxx

Good Morning Tammy! I'm so glad you're having this time with your boy. I wish I could go back and photograph into my memory times like that with our children. It sounds like he has some great advice. I feel myself falling apart the more that I sit around and yet, when I do anything I end up back down for a few days to recover. So frustrating. You have a beautiful place to run and I appreciate how you notice each and every beautiful thing you encounter and share them with us. Enjoy your family time my friend.
Blessings,
Betsy

Good for you, Tammy! My sons cheer me on from time to time, too. I have missed swimming the last few weeks due to a cold, but I have a stretchy band in a basket near my favorite chair to encourage me to remember to use it! Thanks for the pretty photos :) xx

Healthy is good. We walk, and go up and down a flight of stairs several times a day. I need to do more.

Good for your and your son...I think that's great you could do it together.

Happy New Year.

Hi Tammy! You do have beautiful surroundings and a great walk way. I've never been much into exercise, but in the spring I got an app called Couch to 5K. It does intervals of jogging and fast walking similar to what you described. I surprise myself as I advanced through it although the hip replacement got in the way of my completion. I did buy myself a bicycle and ride around the neighborhood about 4 miles each time I go out. I know you're enjoying the time with your boy and wish you a very wonderful new year!

I can only imagine how great it was for you to have your boys home. I LOVE the picture of you and your family---you have a beautiful smile, Tammy! I would love to have a personal yoga teacher...I also love the routine of walking/running. I hear it's really heart healthy. I'm easing back into that.

I enjoyed your last post as well. A belated Merry Christmas!

That's great! I have fallen back in my walking routine/schedule due to some or the other responsibilities. I hope to catch up again next year.
Have fun with your boys!

How nice to have your boys home, and fun when our kids start advising us! There is much beauty on your walk/runs and I enjoyed seeing some of it.

Excellent points! For me, it's been 2 years since I lost and kept off 100 lbs and I'm never obviously going back to my old self (temporary as it was as that wasn't me for most of my life - just for some years after I returned to the desk job). Despite still being at that desk job, I've kept it off BUT I am ever mindful of calorie intake because even if one is eating very healthy - it's still possible to gain a ton of weight on healthy food if they're taking in more than they're burning off. For that reason, for me - I keep it to no more than 1300 calories a day. That's for my size, my age, and activity level. There are some times that I mess up, but not often and as for exercise - for me walking (combined with some running) HAS been enough - because I'm very diligent about doing that EVERY SINGLE DAY - rain, shine, cold, below zero, snow - Ice is the only element that keeps me from it and even then I adjust my route accordingly. I'm very big on the outside walk/run no matter what the weather, because FOR ME - I feel that's best and it's obviously something I've kept up. I actually began the daily walks over 10 years ago, but it's only been the past 2 years that I've been this diligent. My family and friends often think I'm nuts when they see me heading out there in a blizzard in layers of under armour but.... the results are visible in how I look and feel. People can make all sorts of excuses (I used to), but once something becomes habit like my daily routine has, nothing comes in the way of that. For instance, even on my busiest work days - I refuse to work through lunch (that's when I walk/run) so I change into what I call my P.E. clothes and simply get out there. It is my routine. I can't ignore it no matter what is going on. And as I've always said - if I could do this - anyone can. :)

I've been thinking about that too Tammy. We just ordered a rowing machine...it will be interesting to see how I start out with that. Walking outside is always best though...so much to see!

Hi Tammy,
After ages of "thinking" about it, finally this month I started walking, mainly because I found a lovely walking companion. We want to continue it through 2017 and hopefully lose some weight :) I have to say that your walking posts have always inspired me. While our surroundings are not half as beautiful as yours, I'm going to take the cue from you and keep walking.
Regards

How nice to exercise with your son. I enjoy our evening walks around the neighborhood. There are someday it is very hard to get out the door. The dog helps me stay motivated. He needs the walk. He's a very active fellow. I like the idea of the jogging/walking mix. I'm not sure how long I could jog before I collapsed on ground grasping for breath. It's been a long time since I've moved fasted than a brisk walk. I may have to give the jogging a try. If nothing else it will make my husband chuckle.
