Although the weather is still really nice right now, it is starting to warm up during the day and before too long, summer will creep in and temperatures will go up, up, up.
Since the end of our growing season is near, we decided to do a weed and seed activity at The Secret Garden today.
I brought envelopes and colored pencils and markers so that we could get creative with our seed storage.
And one of our newest volunteers who is doing a course in sustainable gardening brought some of her own French Marigold seeds to share. A garden visitor helped to label and package them.
I had a teeny tiny shiny garden guest of my own who was overseeing my seed sorting and storing.
One of the eight-legged variety that was hopping all over the place. I'm not a spider person but this one was pretty amazing with it's silvery appearance.
Keep your sense of proportion by regularly, preferably daily, visiting the natural world.

ReplyDeleteI love gardening and I can only imagine how fun this is. The handmade labels are so, so sweet. Our growing season for annuals is so short I don't plant from seeds. Next month I'll be able to get some plants in the ground. So looking forward to it!

ReplyDeleteAs a newbie follower I don't know much about "The Secret Garden" yet, but I've enjoyed reading about your seed packets today! Just think there will be lots of us, with our coloured pencils at the ready, off to buy seed packets ready for seed collection time!
We are just beginning our growing season here, and DH is planting seeds as I write! Oops, I'd better get out in the garden now!

I saved seeds from some of my perennial flowers last summer, and as I've been eating the candy roaster squash and the pumpkins through the winter, I've also saved seeds from them. My weakness is remembering to label the saved seeds...there may be a lot of Mystery Gardening in 2017!

ReplyDeleteGreat!! I also collected few seeds this year. Earlier I had some hybrid plants whose seeds won't germinate, now I got few heirloom varieties.
ReplyDeleteI am not certain jumping spider and I could coexist. I had a tiny spider on my truck dash and I was fine with just watching him...until he hopped right towards me! A slight scream and grabbed the closest map made quick smash of Monsignor Spider. Thankfully I was not driving. I adore your seed envelopes with the pencil drawn flowers to identify the seeds contained within. Wishing you continued good weather dear.

ReplyDeleteI am catching up with your news after spending lots of time in my own Autumn garden. No matter which hemisphere we live in, it is always a busy time at the change of seasons.
You do the same as I do with seed saving and writing on the packets. I love that you have turned your seed packets into works of art. It is useful for sharing with others who don't necessarily speak the same language as us.
I usually use envelopes for different varieties or harvests of a plant (e.g. lettuce, red, green, oak leaf, hearting, etc.) and then pop all the different little envelopes into paper bags (e.g. winter lettuce, summer lettuce). I like the paper bag system because I can write more information more easily on the front and the bags catch any little seeds that might occasionally escape their envelopes, plus there's room to store the little labels that mark the planting spots in the garden bed.
Your regular quotes are lovely thoughts to carry with me during the day.
