Last Thursday's Morning Walk

Sigiriya sits within the cultural triangle of Sri Lanka and contains 5 of the 8 UNESCO World Heritage Sites that are located in the country.  Sadly, we didn't get to visit any of them.
On the second day of our stay in Kandalama, both boys came down with a nasty stomach bug; possibly because of something they ate that wasn't refrigerated well.  Whatever the reason, it kept them both in bed the entire day and night.

Other than checking on them off and on, there wasn't much we could do. And since we couldn't go far, we wound up taking a morning and afternoon walk, exploring the area around us.

This part of Sri Lanka is in the central dry zone.  Temperatures do not usually go higher than about 90 degrees, so it was warm, but bearable.
Near the water, there was a very strong breeze that helped cool us off.
Kandalama Lake is home to many waterfowl.

And these girls who watched us as we walked along.

Looking back at our hotel; it was designed by architect Geoffrey Bawa so that it would be unobtrusive.  The hotel encompasses 50 acres of land that sits within 200 acres of conservational forest.
With the sun high in the sky, we decided it was time to head back for a bit of refreshment.

I collected rocks along the way so commenced to crochet while having a cold one.
Right now the temperature in Kuwait is 115 degrees.
I haven't walked since we got back.
Believe me, there's a BIG difference between 85 degrees and 115.

Hope things are cooler where you are.
Have a great day!

  1. We hit 110 the other day and it was so miserable!

Loving seeing all the photos Tammy. Sorry that the boys got sick. Poor things.

No walking for me right now either. Just a lot of swimming!

    Love,

  2. Beautiful photos!

I've been in 85 + 100% humidity temps that are more unbearable (to me) than 115 and dry - I've been in both. Dry hot air doesn't bother me but 100% humidity does, very much.

Thankfully, we're enjoying 90s and less humid at least for a couple of days.

  3. I so love all the pictures you are sharing with us...I know for me, I'd never get to see these beautiful places if it were not for you. Thank you. :)

I so love the rocks...this is really kind of cool, now you have rocks from all over and each one will hold a special memory.

    Blessings always :)

  5. Nope, it's about 50 degrees Celsius here (would that be 122 F?). In winter, when I got sick and tired of the cold, I swore that I would bear the heat and not say a word if it's hot, but this is unbearable! You lifted my spirits up with the beautiful photos!

  7. Yes, big difference in temps. It's cooled here to the 90's now and 70's in the a.m. so I have the windows open until later in the day. What a great trip you had...so sorry the boys got sick. I got really sick one time in Mexico too....I'll never forget that....bad news! I was so careful too but I think I swallowed pool water.
BTW, I found a pattern on Purl Soho for the crocheted rocks and they're on my list to give them a try! It called for perle cotton 12 and I have 8 but I'll try with what I have before I order any more yarn/fiber! Yikes! I blew the budget getting yarn for all my YOP projects as I don't really have a "stash" yet but I'm working on it! LOL! Stay cool!

  9. So sorry your boys got sick while you were vacationing, but glad to hear they are okay now. You were in a great area to take a walk. Quite a variety of things to see. Elephants to cows. LOL. It was 111 the day we arrived in the Ca desert. Today humid and looks like rain...in Ca. you never know.
Stay cool. Love your crocheted rock cover...so clever.

  11. Dearest Tammy,

So sorry for the boys being that sick for two days. BUT you will be back again as this is a partnership and that's not just for the term of one vacation. Sri Lanka, or former Ceylon must be very pretty. Our Indonesidan secretary in Jakarta (head office) came from Ceylon. Her name was Ranadewa and she gave me the prettiest fan made from tortoise shell. A nice memory of her as she did pass away...
    Love to you,
    Mariette

  12. Wow! Amazing photos and amazing heat, too- it's really cold here in the UK and very, very wet- not at all what you'd usually hope for in July!
    Hope the boys are recovered.
LOVE the look of the cold beer and crochet- my kinda thing!
    Xx

  13. Love the photos! So sorry your boys were ill. What a bugger! We are hovering each day about the 99 mark. Not too bad, but I find I am hiding inside and getting things done around the house. But we get up early and since it cools down to about 55 each night, mornings are great! Have a great day! Kit

  14. I really enjoy your travle posts. Your wonderful photos are the closest I'll ever come to the exotic places you travel to!

I can't believe you class 90 degrees as warm and bearable. That would be mad hot for me!

I hope the boys got over their stomach bug quickly.

  15. Ninety degrees sounds almost cool to me now after triple digits and lots of humidity. Bet you want to go back!

  16. I was quite enjoying your stroll and photos...but then...I had to laugh...
You my dear are a true crafter...crocheting rocks on your "break". Too funny.
Hope the tummy bug is long gone.
Our heat is not as intense as it was yesterday and thankfully so for the deck project.
Your travels are so varied and thank you for sharing them with us.

  17. I have enjoyed reading your posts and getting a glimpse of the places you visited on your vacation. It looks so pretty and the animals are amazing. So sorry to hear your boys were sick. My son is currently in Shanghai and finding it a challenge to find food that he likes and that agrees with his stomach.
115 sounds dreadfully hot. We were in the low 100s last week and I found it to be a bit unbearable.

  21. Definitely cooler here, Tammy. Hope you can keep cool in those desert temps. They'd remind me of my years in Arizona. I'm a cold weather girl and the heat really bothers me.

    Loved your photos. Susan

  23. The architect certainly did design that hotel to fit into the landscape, what an interesting place. Sorry the boys were ill - not a good time for anybody. The birds and wildlife are very interesting. It's hot here, too, but not THAT hot! I'm afraid I'd curl up in a ball and die! Diane

  26. Yes, unfortunately one of the trials when traveling is what our poor tummies have to endure!! Hope the boys were soon better and able to join in the fun. Bob had a day in bed in South Africa - he was really poorly!

Love that you took time to walk, collect pretty rocks and crochet - well done.

As for 115 degrees - wow, ours is hovering around 100 still and that's bad enough - don't know how you manage but I know a cold one probably helps, ha! ha!

Happy weekend - thanks for your always enjoyable comments on the safari posts Tammy.

    Hugs - Mary

  29. Dearest Tammy, thank you so much for your kind words yesterday. You are an angel. The idea of crochet and a cold one is VERY appealing. ;)

One of my friends and I were discussing how in East Texas the 90s feels like a cold front... you almost need a sweater. I think you must have a similar view, only more so. blessings and cool breezes your way ~ tanna

  33. First, let me say I've missed your posts. Second, I'm so impressed that you can crochet while having a cold one. I can't crochet with that tiny yarn without drinking!

Next I'll tell you that I've just read through your posts and pretty pictures. What a great way for me to learn some geography and a little culture vicariously through you.

My #1 boss is from India. He is a kind and good man and while he's certainly driven and focused at work (not to mention high maintenance), I really like him a lot. I just might ask you for a little lesson in Indian social graces toward the holidays so I can show him how much I respect him.

    Glad you're back!

  34. I love the waterfowl pictures and the dainty cows.

Those temps sound very bearable! Especially if the humidity is low.

(How do you bear the temps in Kuwait? Do you have AC? I've often wondered.)
