Bastille Market

Markets are part of the fabric of French life. From the standard street markets to specialist antique, flower, organic and flea markets, Paris has them all.

Two weeks ago on a Wednesday night in Paris we were watching frames being erected across the street from our hotel and by Thursday morning, a flea market had appeared.

Organic fruits and vegetables.







Beautiful flowers.



Clothes, scarves, jewelry.

There was even fresh fish and other goodies. By the time we got back later that afternoon, the tents had been dismantled and everything cleared away. This particular flea market takes place every Thursday and Sunday from 7:00-2:30 but there are close to 100 that pop up all over the city at different times during the week.

All week we've had brilliant blue skies. Not a cloud to be seen.

And it is still very hot. Even now, just after 6 pm. it is 104 degrees. Although I've been watering every day, some of the flowering plants from last week have already dried up. The sun is just too intense mid-day.

    I just got home from our local Farmer's Market ~ but it looked nothing like this! Such a delight to the eyes and I can imagine the nose... Beautiful!

    What a wonderful market. Our local farmer's market is one hour away from my home and not that big but I do enjoy going every now and then.

    It's hot here too... not as bad as there, but it's hot and humid and I feel sticky most of the time. It seems the summer got here out of time...

    Beautiful Flea Market!! Cool here..... no, actually cold. It is 1:30 p.m. & the temps are barely 50.... Burrrrr!! LOL!!

    The market looks wonderful. I always noticed when I was in Toronto that they have open air markets along the storefronts of the city streets and it looks so different from say - Chicago - where they don't really have anything like that, except for special events.

    Hooray for the blue sky - we have it too - but unlike you, Autumn is on the horizon and our temps are now feeling like it. Outside of Indian Summer which may or may not occur in October/November, we probably won't have many hot days now until next summer. We had our first light dusting of frost last night. I'm ready.

    Have a great end of the week/weekend. After work tomorrow, we'll be off for beautiful Southern Illinois and our annual Family Reunion. :)

    I remember the open air markets in Europe from when we lived there a zillion years ago. I love the colors and the smells...the vibrancy. You just can't get that in a mall.....totally different

    D-r-e-a-m-y!! I imagine myself walking thru their fruit section, selecting a juicy peach and making a mess of myself meandering thru the rest of the market.
    Tammy, do you think a small decorative umbrella would be helpful for your plants when it's too intense for them? I have done that for certain spots when the sun and heat were just too much - makes me feel like i did something good ;p

    Don't you too love Paris? It really has my heart and I hope to go back soon again, it's been 3 years ago now... thanks for all the lovely photo's, the markets are like the ones in amsterdam only with a Parisian flavour.
    I was just talking about your Kuwait summers, how hot is, and sweetheart had to laugh loud, he has been many times to the middle east, but I had no clue it was that hot! I thought, ok it's hot but so hot that you can't even sleep with the windows open in summer? Well, we have colder weather starting in the mornings and early evenings here, so before you know it, I have to wear my Uggs again...
    Anyway, girl, love to chat some more but gotta gow, it's bedtime!

    Well, those blue skies are sure heart warming! But it's still hot? Oh, dear.

    Nothing says beautiful like a French Market..the colors and smells just warm your soul. I'm so happy you got to experience this one. Did you buy anything? A scarf? Some pretty flowers?

    We had a touch of snow on the high mountains last night (it's gone now) so we're having TOTALLY different weather than you are! Want to come for a visit? We can take a nice hike in the mountains in the cool crips air.

    Markets....so much fun!!

    When it gets 100 degrees here and the hot winds are blowing, it just doesn't help to water plants, they just can't survive. So sad!

    I'm sorry about your plants Tammy. Probably all the water you could pour on them wouldn't help them in that heat. The flea markets must be so fun, it just sounds like Paris to me. I'm so glad you got to go. Diane

    Is this your normal temperatures, Tammy? When does it cool off and how cool does it get? We have had UNUSUALLY hot weather here. I just wondered if yours was unusual or the norm? I tell you it wears on me! It cooled off some today, thank goodness. Those markets look so fun and full of good stuff. The street vendors in Florence would pop them up during the day and roll them away in the evening. That was all touristy stuff, not like these beautiful fruits and vegetables, but it was fun to watch them go up and down. Stay cool. blessings ~ tanna

    I love a good old fashioned market....very nice and check out those sunflowers! Delightful!

    Such a shame about the plants drying up despite regular watering. We're having a warm spring day here...a taste of our hot, humid summer yet to come.

    I once visited the markets in Paris and they are indeed absolutely amazing. I love that some shoppers also carry the traditional little baskets for their shopping too.

    Of all the cities my husbands travels to, Paris is his most favorite. He leaves again for there tomorrow. I told him to be sure and look for the Love Locks.     Now that is heat! I am not sure how you deal with that kind of heat, but I would melt I'm sure. Or look like the little potted flower you showed us. Oh wait...I DO look like that!!!! ;-)
    I love open markets and wish I lived closer to Boise where they have a few every week during the Summer. So colorful, but it is the people I love...everyone out having a great time and in such friendly moods. This must have been a lovely sight to see in Paris.

    I am pretty sure if I lived in Paris, no work would get done on Thursdays or Sundays, as I would be LOST in the fabulous flea markets around town. I cannot believe how amazing those markets look. I would need lots of spending money, because I would want to buy everything I saw. You must have enjoyed looking at all the tents so much!! Paris looks like an incredible city. I will put it on my list of places to visit one day!!
