The Ninth Day

One full week of Ramadan is finished with today being the 9th day of the holy month.

Since fasting is from sunup until sundown, restaurants are closed during the day but reopen at the time of iftar, the breaking of the fast.

The traditional way of breaking the fast is to have a few dates and water or laban, which is a salty yogurt drink.

Afterwards, a meal might consist of soup, sambousa, mujadarra (lentils and rice) topped with yogurt and salad with mint.

Since hubby had the battery changed in my car, I was able to get to the grocery store and picked up some qatayef for dessert.

Qatayef is a special dessert served only during Ramadan. Sticky pancakes are filled with sweet cheese or nuts and then deep fried or filled with cream, topped with crushed pistachios and served with a simple rosewater syrup.

I filled some last night with honey cream and then dipped them in crushed pecans. Good thing I had a few while I was making them because once the kids and hubby got a hold of them, they disappeared quickly.

Today's forecast did call for a high of 124 but now I see that has been lowered to 117. At 11 am it is already 109 degrees.

I am still in production mode over here with crocheting little drawstring bags.

And have decided to work on small cross-stitchings that I will incorporate as embellishments.

    I didn't know you had to fill them with cream and nuts. We've often had them with chicken curry :))

    Wow.... I just gained a few pounds.... They look yummy! No wonder your DH & kids loved them!!
    Hot....Hot...Hot... Your are so scorching hot there. We are cooled off nicely to around 70 & having a lot of rain!

    Hi there! Love your drawstring bags. They are really cute and the embellishments look great. I'm ready to try your dessert too. Yum!I can't believe how warm it is. How on earth do you stay cool?

    Yummm-O! I would have eaten every one of those little desserts myself!

    I love all your little crocheted bags. What are you going to do with all of them? Knowing you, they will be given as gifts.

    We're supposed to get down into the 80's in a few days. We'll have to light our fireplaces - ha ha!!

    That all looks sooo yummy!!! I would have eaten quite a few while making them .... I am sure of that ~
    Is that heat normal for it there in the summer ? In Texas we haven't been that hot but it has been over 100 for quite awhile now ~ They are talking about droughts, roads buckling and all of the other effects ~ It is crazy and I am longing for the ocean ~

    The pancakes and your crocheted bags look wonderful. :)

    We're just plugging along here - tomorrow is our Wedding Anniversary and I'll have a post devoted to that. Sarah and I collaborated on a newspaper article this week - I wrote/she took the photos. Band camp is going onward and school starts a week from tomorrow.

    I have experienced the same heat that you live with daily.....I bow to you, girlfriend! OKC was beastly, to say the least. But I won't complain about it being 'hot' here anymore. Yikes.

    Those desserts sure look delish....seems like they are just the right size, too!

    You are getting ready to return to school soon, right? And the boys? Didn't that time go fast for you? Although you have been crocheting up a storm!!! Those drawstring bags are soooo cute and I like the yarn you used, too.

    Seems that my 5 days of being gone has set me way back on blog comments. I need to get caught up on them!

    It amazes me at the differnt foods we all have in different cultures. Was it hard for you to learn to cook these dishes when you moved to where you are now? The little crocheted bags are so adorable! Good work! Here in Texas, the summers are alway triple digit. 110 was yesterday. I know how you feel in the heat! blessings,Kathleen
