Five on Friday: Just Smile

Today is World Smile Day!
Commercial artist, Harvey Ball, created the smiley face in 1963 and through his foundation, World Smile Day was started in 1999 as a way to brighten the world and make it a better place through the simple power of the smile.
Something that made me smile today was finding this drawing book from when my youngest son was in pre-k 15 years ago.
It was still filled with blank pages so when my little friends from next door came over to visit, I set them up with stamps, ink, watercolors and paper.
Malak is 10 and painted this lovely picture of me and Jingles.
I do believe I could happily live in a little yellow house in the country with an apple tree and a rope swing.

Just not too sure about the pigtails and the short dress though.  :)

  2. What fun and you have me smiling. I do love little kids art a lot. I think I could live in a little yellow house in the country, too.
Hope you have a nice weekend.

  3. Yes, living in a yellow house in the country would be nice. There was a time when I rocked the pigtail look. I think that would have been the early 70's. Hope you find many smileys today.

  4. Dearest Tammy,
So funny for looking through the eyes of children.
How did they 'see' those things in you for drawing that way?!
Wishing you a very happy weekend, even though your Friday is already over...
    Hugs,
    Mariette

  5. I didn't know that the smiley face was invented by someone. I guess I thought it just happened. Thanks for this bit of information. I guess it was successful. Here's a smile for you, Tammy. Diane

  9. It is impossible not to smile at your mug and garland. It is amazing to see the world through a child's eyes and how they view us.

  11. I used to work for the organisation that did National Smile Week in the UK and my boss was always annoyed when the two were confused. Our campaign was about dental health and the importance of looking after your teeth. He wanted World Smile Day renamed to Smiley Day - but of course it never happened.

  13. Dearest Tammy,
oh, the Smiley-story is a good story to tell at ANL, don't you think so? You told us, that it was created as a way to brighten the world and make it a better place ... and I think that EVERYTHING that makes the world a better, brighter place is absolutely worth to be linked :o)) [So if you want to, the next linkup starts on 15th October :O)]
I love pictures that are painted by children - the one with the yellow house is so sweet - although I thought the person on the right side is a blonde girl with a dog ... :o)
Happy Sunday and lots of hugs, Traude

  19. Well done on your piece of art, Malak! Tammy, I could quite easily move to a little cottage and live a simple life too. I adore it when my granddaughters come over for a visit and we do all the craft and paint activities together. They love it and are always so proud of their efforts! Interesting to read about the origins of the Smiley face too.

May you have many beautiful reasons to smile in the coming weeks. :)

  20. Children's artwork always makes me smile.
I don't think I ever knew the story behind the famous smiley face. Interesting.
Smiling was instilled in me from a young age by my mom. I'm never quite sure what to make of people who don't smile back when you offer them a smile.

  21. I really needed this today! Thanks so much for making me smile. And I LOVE your portrait!
Was it sweet experiencing the time-travel effect of seeing the little girls continuing the artwork with your son's drawing materials? I hope so :)

  22. Hi Tammy. That was an adorable crocheted happy face! I hadn't heard of world smile day but think it's a good idea to make it a seven-day-a-week practice! Susan
